Swami John Reis And The Blind Shake - Modern Surf Classics 2015

 

 Legendary guitar slinger  John Reis (Rocket from The Crypt, The Sultans,Hot Snakes, Night Marchers,etc.)  wanted to make a surf album  so he joins forces with Minnesota`s psychedelic punkers The Blind Shake.So a couple of years ago they got together and laid down  a whack of tracks  and now the resulting album is finally out.Washing up on shore is ``Modern Surf Classics`` containing  13 tracks of hard driving surf ,hell for the most part this is surf punk meets  smash mouth surf  and it`s damn good.Yes there is a few traditional surf tracks and that adds to the kool feel of the album.Highlights include: ``Over The Falls``, ``Zulu As Kono``, ``Sea Saw`` and ``Kooks On The Face``.

   Overall  ``Modern Surf Classics`` is a killer album  that is a blast of fresh air as well as a wall of sound.It may not appeal to  all fans of surf but there really is something for everyone here (even if your a traditionalist). Relax Trio - Stop This Madness 2014

Hard to believe The RelaxTrio  have been at it for just over 10 years now.Hell the band`s average is 20, kid you not. In 2012 they released the stellar ``Shake and Roll `` (their 3rd album)  and people  outside of their native Finland  started to take note of these young upstarts.Over the years they have managed to play a brand of rock n roll that appeals to a wide range of fans,from the blues to rockabilly to country.Now comes the band`s latest effort ``Stop This Madness`` and this puppy is pretty damn good.We get 11 originals and 1 cover  of kool diverse  rock n roll. The band mixes things (as it usually does)  with some blues, country and rockabilly thrown in.Highlights include: ``Too Late``, ``I Drive My 55``, ``Dance With Me`` and ``Melbourne or Hell``.

Kemp - Go Psycho 2015

French psycho's Kemp have been at it ,off and on since 86.They are a band that many consider very kool but to others they kinda remain a mystery.As far as the band's output goes ,there is a demo, 2 singles and 2 albums,all of which are pretty damn good. In 2014 they headed into Diablo Studios and the resulting effort    "Go Psycho" is now out.This puppy smashes the clock with 12 tracks of psychobilly  that for the most part  rock hard and  fast.Kemp have never really been a typical psychobilly band and it's no different here.Hell at times they start to come off like a band that just wants to jam but then quickly show restraint and reel them selves back in.It really is part of their appeal.These boys know how to play and show it.Highlights include: " Go Psycho", " Monster", " Lou And The Natics" and " Clochard".

       Kemp pull no punches here  and have released a well produced(by Doyley of Diablo Records),very strong and easily their best album yet. The Bombs - Don't Wait Too Long 2014

Since 2001 this southern German outfit has been dishing out some very likeable rock n roll / rockabilly and have earned a rep as a top shelf band.Over the years the band has released 2 albums, the last one, 2009's  " Straight From The Bar" managed to create a whack of interest in the band and rightfully so.It's been 5 years since that release so now the band has dropped  the apply named  album "Don't Wait Too Long". This puppy comes strolling in 16 original and  highly likeable tracks that range from rock n roll to  rockabilly to country.This is one diverse and strong  album  but then again if your familiar with the band,it's just what you would expect.Highlights include: " Do The Bop ", " It's Hot ", " Desert Eagle" and " I Know Any Heartache Is For Me".

           
          This is a sweet sounding album that is very fresh, lively and if I dare say ,kinda hip in a way .It may have taken  The Bombs  a few years to release  "Don't Wait Too Long" but they have never sounded better.That's reason enough to cough up a few bucks for the album. Marcos Sendarrubias - High Voltage Rockabilly 2014

 Marcos Sendarrubias  is a force in Spanish rock n roll, hell many consider him a legendary figure in the Spanish music scene .From rock n roll to doo -wop to rockabilly and more, this kat has done it and does  it well. Since 1995 he's  been in  The Nitemares, The Moon River Trio and he's still going strong  with  the doo -wop group Del Prince.If that wasn't enough he as also been involved  in some way with a  list of artist as long as your arm (it actually is impressive). Now comes,surprisingly  his first solo album "  HIGH VOLTAGE ROCKABILLY " and this puppy kicks some butt .Punching in with 14 tracks that range from wild rockabilly ,to a little country to some raw rock n roll and it's all good.Of the 14 tracks, 12 have appeared  on Sendarrubias's previous  three 45's released by Carmela Records and 2 are brand new.Highlights include: "On The Dancefloor", " This Is A Robbery", " Daddy's Little Girl", " Marie".

    Sendarrubias is backed up here  with a  who's who of Spanish rockabilly/rock n roll  (Charlie Hightone,  Tony "Ponyboy" Talavera , Carlos Lopez  Salomon Molina , Mario Cobo just to name a few). Even with all the  talent here ,what  really makes "High Voltage Rockabilly"  better than good is that it's chalked full of killer tunes. The Shockwave! - Contact From Space 2014

Finnish surf studs The Shockwave! have been laying down a kool brand of surf music since 2010.Their 2011  debut album "Death Race" is pretty stout . Hell the album created  a whack of interest in the band  and as a result  of that   Double Crown Records  signed them up. These kats play a mix of  traditional  and eleki surf  that's very  fresh.  The band's  sophomore album "Contact From Space"  shows that this is one serious outfit. We get  13 tracks(including 3 covers) that combine traditional , eleki,  and elements of modern surf  that  hit the spot.The album has a good mix of slow and fast tempo tracks that make for a smooth ride.Highlights include: " Golden Gambler", "Contact!", "Shock A Go Go" and "Flow Waves". Also you have to give it to a band when they cover a  a song like "Take On Me"(yes the song by A-Ha) and make it not just their own but also kinda kool.
