The Surf Zombies - It's a...THING! 2014

Once in awhile I really get excited about a band's new release,you know the feeling: not knowing what to expect but at the same time you know it's going to be good.Well case in point the new  Surf Zombies album " It's a...THING!". Let's just say this puppy is mighty fine.Once again The Surf Zombies deliver the goods, just like they have done with their 3 previous albums. It's a...THING! rides in with 14 original surf tracks that range from a little surf punk to traditional surf.At times some of the tracks feel a bit restrained but that adds to the smooth flow of the album.This is one kool slice of surf rock.Highlights include: "Rock N Roll Apeman","The Bertlemann Slide","Tophat" and "Martian Beach".

    
   The Surf Zombies are a band that seems to be getting  better with every release. Night Nurse - Night Nurse 2014

When the Finnish psychobilly outfit,Night Nurse formed in early 2012 they quickly became a band to watch.Basically this is Jim Dandy's Revenge with a female singer.When Wolverine Records released the band's track "Where Shadows Go" on the  compilation "Roots! Riot! Rumble! people really took notice and the song started to get airplay on some psychobilly shows.Hell there is even interest in these kats in my neck of the woods(Canada). With the release of their self-titled debut, Night Nurse have thrown down their hand and it's an impressive one. With 12 servings of psychobilly that aren't all cut from the same cloth makes this a pretty damn good album.Sure at times this sounds familiar but still manages to sound fresh and invigorating. Highlights include:" Teenage Kaliman","Mean Old Low Down Dirty Bastard","Obsession" and "Where Shadows Go".  

    Someone told me  Night Nurse were "modern psychobilly" another dude told me they are horror punk and the band claims to be both. Black Cat Bone Squad - The Porkshop 2014

Belgium's Black Cat Bone Squad are one band that you could never call boring or predictable.Many people have been caught off guard with their self described "witches-brew of dark roots, psychobilly/rockabilly,country, blues and punk". Their debut album "Palace Of Oddities"(2009)  is pretty solid and interesting. Next up for the band was a split album in 2011 that kinda went under the wire.Now their back with "The Porkshop"  and the buzz on this puppy has been impressive and well deserved.Clocking in with 13 tracks of their witches brew, this is pretty damn good .These kats run the table here from trashy blues to psychobilly and a whole whack in between.Highlights included : "Whiskey" , " (All My Friends Are) Vampires", "Surf To Hell" and "Darkness"

   
    Black Cat Bone Squad started up as a straight up rockabilly  but over the years they have become a band that thrives on pushing  the limits all while changing up the gears  and that has made them better .There is enough rockabilly here to please but it's when they mix it up is when this band really shines.If your looking for something a bit different "The Porkshop" is for you .This is one kool and strong album that is well worth checking out. Rhythm Sophie - Born To Live The Blues 2014

From young upstart to the European "Queen of rhythm 'n' blues/rockabilly"in a few short years.No matter how you slice it Rhythm Sophie is one dynamic singer. From the blues to country to rock n roll  she has managed to blow fans away no matter what genre she tackles.Originally from Hungary where she featured in the Tom Stromy Trio and Sonny and his Wild Cows before moving to Germany.In 2013 she released the single I'm Gonna Tell My Daddy! and it managed to snag some major airplay on some rockabilly shows around the world.Also late last year her single "Sweet Willie" was released  as part of Rydell's Records  prestigious Rockabilly Queens series.Which brings us to Rhythm Sophie's debut album "Born To Live The Blues'  and I have to say this is one very impressive disc.With 14 tracks that range from rockabilly to rhythm 'n' blues and straight up 50's rock n roll  this puppy delivers.Highlights include: "Don't be gone long", "Till the well run dry","You're driving me mad" and "I'm gonna tell my Daddy'.
   As much as  Rhythm Sophie shines here, her band Mister Twist(who have been with her for awhile) also shine,this is one tight outfit. Born To Live The Blues is fresh ,makes for a great listening and doesn't take itself serious.You may want to take note of  Rhythm Sophie,she's the real deal . Evil Devil - Bad Tales 2013

These Italian Psychos have been pushing out their brand of exciting psychobilly since 2001.Right from the get go these kats have impressed as well as  developing  a fair sized  following in the process .The band was on a hot streak up to 2008 with the release of 4 pretty damn solid albums .Then life kinda got in the way  and  plans for a 5th album kept getting pushed back.Well now Evil Devil are back with their 5th album (all their albums are on Crazy Love Records,that's kool) and dare I say their best yet. "Bad Tales" comes crashing in with 13  little tales of true life and terror on the road. Self described as an album of Psycho'n'rockabilly punk kinda nails this puppy bang on.Definitely less old school  and more punk but it is also the band's most diverse album.Highlights include : "Sludge", "Banned","Revolver" and the kool " The Beast Of Bodmin".

        Over the last couple of years there were more than a few people who wrote Evil Devil off  and "Bad Tales"  has proven them wrong.This is modern psychobilly that isn't afraid to push the envelope a little all while kicking some butt. Reverend Horton Heat - Rev 2014

I have to admit  that I am a longtime fan of Reverend Horton Heat  so I am biased but no matter how you cut it  they are a great band.You could say their sound is a perfect blend of rock n roll and rockabilly and when these kats are on it few bands can touch them.Hell they are a must see band  in anyone's book .It's been over 4 years(2009) now since the band's last release so "Rev"(their 11th album) is kinda a big deal. This puppy is one smokin' album that is the best thing they have done since 2004's "Revival". Clocking in with 13 very solid tracks of rock n roll,rockabilly,surf and the standard one country tune.Highlights include:"Mad Mad Heart" ,"Victory Lap", "Schizoid" and "Let Me Teach You How To Eat".

    Rev is refreshing,has a pedal to the metal feel and a sense of urgency about it .One gets the impression that Reverend Horton Heat is a rejuvenated band here.Still hungry and still killer. Highly Recommended !  https://www.facebook.com/reverendhortonheat     http://www.reverendhortonheat.com/
