For many people out there The Zipheads are heavily associated with the psychobilly scene. One problem with that is these cats are really a straight up killer rock n roll band. From their stout debut album "Prehistoric Beat"(2013) to the single "Just Don't Seem To Care" (2015) and their cover of "Earwigs In My Brain" (2016) prove that.If that wasn't enough their latest release "Z2: Rampage!" shows in spades that this is one serious rock n roll outfit. This puppy comes in with 15 tracks that gives you a big bang for your buck.It opens and crashes in with smash mouth surf then rocks hard, lets you catch your breath, then rocks out only to end with a classic soul/r&b number. It's a hell of a ride that's hard hitting, refreshing and diverse. As usual we get a kool mix rock, billy, punk,a little ska and even some r&b.There is also some damn solid harp action here to boot. Highlights include: "Surfquake", "Instead", "Last Man On Earth", " Rampage" and a smokin' cover of "Get Ready".
A lot has been said about Voodoo Swing over the years ,good and bad.For some they are not rockabilly enough for others they aren't bluesy enough. Some would say it's been almost a no win situation but at the end of the day they have been and are a killer band. This is a band that has always blurred the lines, playing the music they wanted to and loving it (kudos to them). With 7 really strong albums under their belt , the last in early 2013,then later that year the band decided to pack it in. Well you can't keep a good band down and they have reformed and dropped the album " To You My Friend ". This baby struts in with 11 tracks that are surprisingly refreshing and diverse . This isn't a rockabilly album, hell for the most part it's a killer blues fueled ride with an awesome vibe. There is some rockabilly ,some honky tonk, country, rock and more roots. We get horns, key boards and even the mandolin here. One has to be impressed with the range of ground they cover here.Highlights include: " You Ain't Doing Me Right", "To You My Friend","Chokin' The Chicken " and the kool "So Fine".
Long time dutch psychos The Milwaukee Wildmen have always been an uncompromising hard rockin' psychobilly band .With a fistful of damn good releases these cats have made a pretty good name for themselves.Yet they remain an underrated band by many (especially in North America) , which is kinda mind boggling.Their last release, the stout mini-album "Blood On The Wall" was back in 2013.Well there back, this time on Diablo Records with the hard driving " Bloodmoon Shadow". We get 11 tracks that will light a fire under your butt .As usual these cats deliver a furious brew full of billy, kool riffs, hard rock n roll and attitude. This is one album that has an impressive swagger about it but then again if your familiar with them you kinda expect that.Highlights include: " Devils Tail", "Psychos Like You" , " Die Alone" and "Dead Heros".
No one can accuse The Ramblin Bandits of pussy footing around. These cats seem to have come screaming out of nowhere real fast ,hell this trio hasn't been around a year yet and they have done a demo ,signed with Rhythm Bomb Records, put out a single and have an album dropping .This outfit is loaded with pedigree and delivers some serious killer rockabilly. The band's debut album " On A Hill " is one smokin' hot platter of 13 hip shaking tracks of rockabilly/rock n roll. Right from the start this puppy hits the gas and and doesn't let up.This is hungry rockabilly that has a sense of urgency about it .Highlights include: " Bank Robber Joe", "Talk Dirty", " Getto Bash" and "Why Why Why".
There isn't a bad track to be found here and "On A Hill" is more that just a stout debut .This is flat out good and a must have. The Ramblin Bandits have delivered a knock out punch here and when you get up your going to hit the repeat button.Highly Recommended!!
The other day I was pleasantly surprised to see that french psychos 6 Feet Down were not only back but they also had a new album dropping. In early 2013 the band released their 2nd album, the pretty stout "Strange" and managed to get a whack of attention.By early 2014 the band seem to disappear off the radar screen for many. The reason for this was a change in the drummer seat and then the band went about resetting itself . Well the results are now in with "Guns & Glory" an album that packs a big wallop. With 10 tracks of "explosive psychobilly" that mean business. This is hard ,melodic and modern psychobilly that rocks out pretty damn good.In the past these cats have mixed hard rock and psychobilly successfully together and again do so here. There is an underlining boldness and a kool vibe here that helps drive this puppy on. Highlights include: "Victim Of Unreality"," Wake Up", " Never Dead" and "Bleeding Bastards"
